History and Mission

Cornell University is a private research university located in Ithaca, New York.

Its most distinctive part, Cornell Johnson is the graduate business school of Cornell University, also known as Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management.

Ezra Cornell founded Cornell University in 1865 and subsequently Cornell University Johnson graduate school was established in 1946. Ezra Cornell was a successful businessman and the founder of Western Union. While early thoughts began to stir about developing a business school, World War 1 caused these plans to be put on hold as the population of the school was not numerous at the time. The second president of Cornell University, Jacob Gould Schurman, advanced to have the business school opened once again, and once again it was put on hold, this time due to the poor economic climate of the depression. In 1941, after many years of false starts, the opening of a business school was once again proposed and approved by unanimous decision.

The University was renamed in 1984 after it was gifted $20 million dollars from a graduate of the universe, Samuel Curtis Johnson who was the founder of S.C Johnson & Son. The large gift is still the largest monetary gift ever given to a university to date.

In 2017, Cornell was gifted another generous sum of money, again from the Johnson family, this time the gift was $150 million dollars. In recognition of this gift, he newly formed college of business was named Cornell SC Johnson College of Business.

Currently, Cornell University Johnson graduate school has 58 full-time faculty members. The student breakdown is as follows: There are 600 MBA students, in both the full-time Masters of Business programs. One program is a 2-year program, and the other is a 1-year accelerated program. At this time, the school has over 15,200 alumni.
